The self aggrandizement of MANY mainstream journalists is galling. Scott Pelley is at the top of that arrogant heap - or he was anyway. They act as if you aren't employed where THEY are employed you somehow don't count. I personally experienced that with one "Ms. Perky" over at NBC. (CBS Later chewed her up and spit her out.) Look, today a kid with a cell phone camera is breaking bigger stories in the heartland of America and finding more fraud than 60 minutes would ever bother to sniff at. I knew Mike Wallace and I can honestly say he is rolling in his grave.
Once again, David Friend, you are 100% right I’m still working on my piece about this week it’ll be a few more days but you, my friend really hit it on the head thank you thank you thank you!
Scott Pelley set himself on fire knowing the media loves a good self-immolution with plenty of bright hot flames. He picked his hill.
Where he was incredibly selfish was to insinuate that any journalism coming out from CBS colleagues carries a shadow of doubt. On that, he's one man, entitled to his own perspective. Gratefully, Leslie, Bill, and Jon and the producing team that stays and does good work, chose to work inside the system and still hold themselves to their own high standards, not a man who is incredibly, obviously, emotionally on edge. The NYTimes interview was sad to watch.
Personally, never had a need to say more than "hello" in the hallways and lobby.
Not sure why 60 Minutes always wanted to play his trademark repeating what someone just said in a pensive voice, holding his glasses for effect.
Example, Scott interviewing Scott:
"So you are saying that you know, with certainty, Bari Weiss is and I quote you here, “murdering CBS News.” You must know, that's a headline-grabbing charge. Scott, do I understand that right?"
One time, I would have loved if the interviewee had said, "did you just hear what I said?"
Anyway, just a pet peeve. Agree with all your points.
Great column. Sorry you had to apologize to Vance years back. Jeff Fager should have taken your call at the very least. I don't think Bari Weiss chose well in her hiring of new leadership but as you say time will tell. Pelley was a fixture at 60 Minutes but I guess he felt he needed to speak out knowing he would be let go soon after.

Agree with David Friend. I am curious about how Bari Weiss will do for CBS what she did for TFP.

Smug Leftist reporters, journalists in the media today - Edward R. Murrow & Jim Lehrer are turning in their graves.

I’m glad you didn’t wait until Sunday to release this; I’ve been eager to read your wise assessment. You didn’t disappoint!
He used the whole scene as a ‘F it all’ . He said what everyone was thinking knowing what the end result could be which just made it more dramatic.
Pelley left BW no choice. He dared her to fire him. And she called his bluff!
